My mother in law said she would have identfied what La Mer depicted without reading the programme in advance.?

I argue with her that most listeners, even experts, generally could not correctly guess the composers programme for most tone poems, symphonies etc.

Have you ever played a piece for someone and they correctly guessed the programme? Eg-Play La Mer and they guessed that it depicts the Ocean? My mother in law said she would have identfied what La Mer depicted without reading the programme in advance.?
I don't think anyone could identify it either. If Debussy had claimed that it represented something entirely different I doubt that anyone would ever question it. My mother in law said she would have identfied what La Mer depicted without reading the programme in advance.?
La Mer and other tone poems have been so ripped off over the years, especially for film, and cartoons, that we have those visual associations with the COPIES -so when we hear the original, we go AHAH! Less-popular tone poems, or those with more arcane association, would of course be harder. But those gushing, flowing effects - pretty easy one. Think of Great Gate at Kiev - sounds like something bag, massive, formidable - power, army, stone - but that is another easy one.

Think Planets - then all the outer-space things that John Williams wrote. Or Copland - Appalachian Spring - and then all the Marlboro-man westerns and their music. It goes on and on . . .
Mother in laws are a world of their own. Mine guesses much worse than yours despite she lives averagely 6,000 miles off.

But your question is a can of worms: it's the basic point of program music. Rimski-Korsakov was climbing mirrors to deny he was programmatic when he wrote Sheherazade, as if he was ashame of that potent masterpiece: and, yes, my younger brother guessed that powerful theme was a ship at sea. I as a child took the omnipotent flow of Moldau for the description of heavy peasants' works. Our teacher was fighting hard with the two entwined themes of Borodin's Steppes. It's not always that easy.

Is program music music at all ? Would Bach accept all those storms Rossini, Verdi and the guys put in their operas ? And, as raindrops keep falling on our head, isn't there one thing called painting for that ?

One of my favorite painters, Lorenzo Lotto, XVI century, depicts St. Nick taken up to heaven while the sky is divided into a wonderful venetian blue and a stormy cloud pushed off by sea wind. That's descriptive. Or you prefer Toys Symphony ?
Just by the title, sure.

:)I'm 17 yrs old.. is it okay to use la mer products?
I've heard that the sooner isn't the better... I don't know. It seems that using it when you're this young wouldn't do anything (at least anything super noticable)
it is not that you are 17 year old or 25 year year old the only thing is that you need experience about it
the sooner the better !!!

Proper warming technique for Creme de la Mer application?

I did a lot of googling on the proper technique for using Creme de la Mer. Most people say to use a tiny amount (half a pea size) and rub vigorously between the hands for several seconds before dabbing on the face.

The problem is, when I rub for a few seconds, the cream disappears as it is sucked up my the skin in my hands. Am I doing something wrong? I don't want to use massive amounts because it is so expensive, but I also don't want to apply it incorrectly and end up breaking out.

I was thinking about microwaving a spoonful in an empty lip balm tub and using that for a week so that I don't have to waste time in the morning.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has a youtube link with a visual tutorial, please share. Thanks a lot!Proper warming technique for Creme de la Mer application?
Do not put that product in a microwave, the radiation will turn the positive ions in the product negative and you will loose some of the effectiveness the product.

You can either make a double boiler to heat it. Using a metal ramekin a pea size drop of the cream in then float the ramekin in a glass bowl full of hot water. After about a minute it will heat the metal ramekin and the product. You can buy these ramekins at Ikea, and kitchen stores.

If your going to warm it in your hands only put it on your finger tips and backs. They are less absorbentant than the palms of your hands. Warm it up there and you won't loose much of the product.

  • Lyrics for Charles Trenet's ';La Mer';--translate to English?

    Any French-speakers able to give me an English translation of Trenet's beautiful chanson, ';La Mer';? (NOT looking for the American re-written version titled ';Beyond the Sea';

    La mer

Qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs

    A des reflets d'argent

    La mer

    Des reflets changeants

    Sous la pluie

    La mer

    Au ciel d'ete comfond

    Ses blanc moutons

    Avec les anges si purs

    La mer bergere d'azur

    Infinie

    Voyez

    Pres des etangs

    Ces grand roseaux moillies

    Voyez

    Ces oiseaux blancs

    Et ce maisons rouillees

    La mer

    Les a berces

    Le long des golfes clairs

    Et d'une chanson d'amour

    La mer

Tried this once - didn't work. French is not my thing, but this translation is a start.

    The sea

which one sees dancing along the clear gulfs (bays)

    to gleams of silver.

    The sea

    Of changing reflections

    Under the rain.

    The sea

Confuses (confonde) the summer sky's sheep (fleece? cloud metaphor?)

    With angels so pure,

    The sea

    Shepherd of blue infinity.

    Look!

    Next to the ponds

    Those tall wet reeds.

    Look!

    Those white birds

And those rusty (? red) houses

    The Sea

    Has cradled them

    Along the clear gulfs.

    The Sea

Has cradled my heart for life.

Has anyone tried LA MER facial cream? Was it good,?

did you see any changes in your skin? What?Has anyone tried LA MER facial cream? Was it good,?
It's a great generic moisturizer but here is an industry tip a little goes a long way so buy the eye cream instead of the moisturizer. It's the same product and you will save 60 bucks. Then ask for samples of the face cream and you'll be set.

    Cheers!

Creme del la mer question ?

    Creme del la mer question?

Do you get more samples at the counter then online ? Online you only get one but at the counter do you get more ? or are they stingy with them . I currently use Lancome and they give me loads of samples .I travel a lot so love the samples for my bagCreme del la mer question ?
I worked in this industry for a long time and the beauty companies don't like the consultants to give samples unless the customer buys a product. Samples are actually expensive and not regarded as a gratuity. They are given as a way to create a sale to people that are serious buyers.

It depends on the consultant, some are naughty and give them out willy nilly others do not.Creme del la mer question ?
If you ask directly, I believe they should give you samples. Great products they have but not for everyone. I personally love the lip balm and cream.
